What to Expect When you Enter Therapy

You may have been to therapy in the past. You may have just seen therapy scenes in movies, never experiencing it personally. But you came to this site to explore therapy either for yourself or someone close to you. This is a big step towards improving overall well-being, and I applaud you for this bravery. It is more common to have a therapist than you may think, and it is good to research what, where, and who will be a good fit for your needs. I want you to know what to expect in my office once you have decided to meet with me for the first time.

There are intake forms that you can download here to complete before our first official meeting, but a FREE telephonic introductory call or referral is available for you to help make an informed decision. The forms will help us start the honest, crucial therapy process and will inform you of all your patient rights and confidentiality protocols.

Whether you are meeting in my office or Zoom-ing online, the most important thing to know about our first sessions is: be yourself. For any therapeutic relationship to grow, it takes several sessions to build rapport and learn about each other. This will consist of discussing your history, day-to-day, dreams, worries, and therapy goals. I, as your therapist, have many hats during our initial and continuing sessions. I am a listener, coach, mediator, support, and objective observationalist onto your life and psychological needs. Our mission, as a team towards your betterment, is to help you have a realistic perspective on the bumps, burdens, and barriers in your world.

Just as in life, therapy has a beginning, middle, and end. It all depends on our working relationship and your feelings towards achieving psychological goals. I meet with people generally once a week, but depending on needs, you may need 2x/week or 1x/month. Sessions can be a short 30-minute check-in, a regular 1-hour meeting, or a longer 1.5-hour session, generally reserved for family sessions, initial intake conferences, or other, in-depth needs. We can always re-evaluate if something doesn’t feel right: from scheduling to therapy technique to different online platforms. I work closely and creatively with you for your needs to be met.
